Reopening of Former Trump Taj Mahal Casino

16 May 2018

Formerly the largest casino in the world with 120,000 square feet of gaming space, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino is expected to reopen on June 28 this year. The eighth wonder of the world has had a run of bad luck over the years but under new management it promises to be even bigger and greater.

In March 2017, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino passed into the ownership of Hard Rock International. Its chairman, Jim Allen, stated that the new casino would be the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City and would have two separate arenas with additional 2400 slot machines. Astonishing 325 million dollars had been invested in the refurbishment of the areas which he promised would have their grand opening in the summer of 2018.

It is well-known that Hard Rock International is not the second nor the third owner of this establishment; in fact, it is the twelfth owner. It is quite obvious that this place has had its fair share of problems.

Firstly, there was a bankruptcy problem. On September 10, 2014, Trump Entertainment Resorts filed for bankruptcy. This meant that the Trump Taj Mahal Casino had to shut down unless multiple parties made concessions. The workers of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino united in efforts to save it and delivered a petition to the mayor, which didn’t help much though. However, on December 18, the main union of workers, UNITE HERE, managed to strike a deal with Trump Entertainment Resorts that saved the casino from closing until 2016. In February 2016, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino finally went bankrupt and became the property of Icahn Enterprises. Since then, this majestic establishment has remained closed.

Secondly, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino had to deal with accusations that linked it with organized crime. Namely, in 1992, the U.S. Senate Subcommittee presented a report that linked Trump’s businesses to the Hong Kong-based organized crime group 14K Triad. Luckily, in August 2013, all criminal allegations were disputed, and the casino’s key license was renewed. Although the name of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino was cleared, there is still some risk that the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino might become a target of organized crime.

Finally, there were a few shooting incidents at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino. One of them happened on May 27, 2009, when a casino manager was killed. Another one took place on September 18, 2011, when a carjacking incident in the casino’s parking garage resulted in a man getting killed and a woman wounded. The most tragic incident occurred on March 24, 2016, when three teenagers were shot.

We hope that the new management of the casino will not have to deal with any of such problems. The Hard Rock Casino & Hotel will emphasize entertainment over gaming and the management aims to host musical performances throughout the week. The resort has already booked 300 acts, which include: Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton, Steely Dan, Kid Rock, Toby Keith, and others. Its expanded entertainment venue can now hold up to 7,000 people and all the rooms and restaurants have been completely redesigned. If we add to this over 21,000 slot machines and 120 table games, the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel is definitely a destination that should not be missed this summer.
