Video Poker and Its Rules

18 March 2018

Poker has been a very popular game since its creation, so it is only natural that in modern days it has got a digital form – video poker. Luckily, those people who are not so good at reading people or are bad at hiding their emotions now have a better chance of winning at video poker. Additionally, people who do not have time to go to a casino can play video poker online in the comfort of their own home or any other place at that. This way, the game feels more like betting on sports, and if you are already too familiar with the Buffalo Wild Wings betting and other sportsbooks, video poker will come as a nice change.

What is video poker?

The name says it all. Video poker is a video game used by casinos for the purposes of gambling. It can be played on a poker machine in the casino or you can install it on your PC, a home console or a mobile device.

Video poker is quite similar to real poker – the only difference being the fact that you don’t have a human opponent. This makes the game of poker less psychological and more mathematical. You don’t need to read your opponents’ emotions or try to hide yours. Rather, you need to make the best calculations based on a given hand. Ultimately, the goal of video poker is to bet on your hand and win money by doing so.

What does a game of video poker look like?

A game of video poker goes like this. First, the player places a bet in the form of game coins. Then, the player is dealt 5 cards which can be kept or redealt. Cards can be redealt only once. After that, the player has a chance to raise the bet unless all of the game coins were used at the beginning of the game. The player wins only if certain requirements are met, and here are some ways how to win:

Jacks or Better: The player has a pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces in the final hand.

Two Pair: The player has two pairs of any card in the final hand.

Three of a Kind: The player has three cards of the same denomination in the final hand.

Straight: The player has 5 cards in numerical order in the final hand.

Flush: The player has 5 cards of the same suit, but they are not in numerical order.

Full House: The player has three cards of the same denomination and a pair.

Four of a Kind: The player has four cards of the same denomination.

Straight Flush: The player has 5 cards of the same suit in numerical order.

Royal Flush: The player has a 10, a Jack, a Queen, a King, and an Ace of the same suit in the final hand.

Your winnings depend on your hand and the amount of game coins used in the game. The sum is shown on the screen and you can easily keep track of how much money you win or lose.

Now that you know how to play video poker, you don’t have to waste time going to a casino anymore.
